Fireplace surround updates that reset the whole room

A fireplace surround is usually the first thing you see in a living room, which is why a dated one makes the whole room feel older than it is. Updating it is a contained project with an outsized effect: refacing the front, rebuilding the mantel, and squaring up the proportions can reset a room without touching anything else in it.

What it covers

What a fireplace surround update includes.

Refacing existing masonry
Tile, stone, or plaster applied over dated brick, detailed so the new face looks original rather than applied.
Mantels and millwork
A new mantel and fireplace surround in proportion to the wall and the ceiling height, built and finished on site.
Hearth work
Raised, flush, or removed hearths, with the floor around them brought back in cleanly.
Full-height treatments
Carrying material to the ceiling where the wall and the room can take it.
Integration with built-ins
Coordinating the fireplace surround with flanking cabinetry so the two are designed together rather than fitted around each other.

Scope and cost

What moves the number.

We do not quote a price before seeing the home. These are the things that change it, and we will tell you which ones apply to yours at the walkthrough.

  • Whether the existing masonry stays and gets refaced or comes out entirely

  • Material choice, since a stone or detailed tile fireplace surround carries more labor than square footage suggests

  • Clearances required around the firebox, which are not negotiable

  • Whether a television is being mounted, and what that means for framing and cable routing

  • How the surround meets the flooring, and whether the flooring has to be patched

Common questions

Questions we are asked.

Often not. Refacing over sound masonry is common and keeps both cost and demolition down. If the existing structure is not sound we will tell you before quoting the new fireplace surround.

Let’s talk about your project.

Tell us what you have in mind and we will tell you honestly what it takes, what it costs, and whether we are the right company for it.
